Yes, aside from this being a comic when most of us expected a novel, it isn't actually bad at all. I'm a fan of zombie comics so the more the merrier. The narrative is pretty bare bones and they used up a lot of black ink in almost every panel so I suppose it's more about what's not there than what's there...As another reviewer said, the soldiers aren't really fleshed out either in personality or actual images so they become a bit interchangeable. The only other problem is that this first installment is quite minimal in storyline as well - it feels a bit like the epilogue that would hook you in to a much larger work. A lot happens but it all starts and finishes in something more like a sketch of the action than something more detailed that would grip you with suspense.
Does this mean we'll be waiting decades for the whole plot to arrive installment by installment? Hope it's compelling enough to maintain interest over the long term and build a fan base. Hope the next installments are more fleshed out so we can care more about the characters, main or minor.
Here's hoping...

My introduction to Brian Keene's graphic novels. Black and white artwork but very realistic and SCARY stuff here! Brian Keene also writes regular horror novels too! Check this out if you LOVE Zombie stories!
Zombies aren't anything new but I really enjoyed how Brian Keene changed the game again. The plot was brilliant from start to end and was constantly moving forward to obtain a goal. I couldn't put it down. The foreshadowing and flashbacks were among my favorites and I thought the juxtaposition was amazing. Great job Keene! Keep them coming.
Forewarning, this is a graphic novel (comic) NOT A LITERARY NOVEL. Ok, that being said. This was a great graphic novel. Having read everything I can get my hands on by Brian Keene, and absolutely loving his take on the zombie genre, it was great to see it in comic form to see how it would be presented. The drawings are wonderfully done, the story line is very well done, and leaves it open to a great follow up in The Last Zombie Inferno, which is already upcoming in single comic form. Fans of Brian Keene and of graphic novels will love the combination, and should definitely look to picking this one up.
I am a Brian Keene fan and own almost all of his books as signed and numbered limited editions. Brian is widely known for his character development and his descriptive and edgy writing style. Unfortunately those skills don't transfer well to a comic book format.
If I were you and hadn't truly experienced Brian Keene yet, buy/read THE RISING, CITY OF THE DEAD, and GHOUL. Any of these will introduce you to the creative world and great story telling skills of a great author.
Just finished The first installment of The Last Zombie. My one complaint was that I didn't purchase the entire series and now have to wait for to deliver the rest. If you're looking for 'The Rising' (amazing) or 'Dead Sea'(also amazing) you'll find that this story is entirely different and ALSO refreshing in its perspective of the zombie apocalypse long after the dead have reanimated. Brian Keene hit on this topic a bit in the 'The RisingSelected Scenes from the End of The World', but this comic really delves into the disease, the despair, and those people that always talk about 'just holding out' till the zombies die. Guess what? That might not be so great either. Thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for the rest to come in!
I love Brian Keene. He's my favorite horror author out there. His stories are usually original and have a great cast of characters. The Last Zombie is no exception.
What sets this story apart from others is where the story is set in the timeline. Instead of a bunch of normal people hearing about a new flu on the TV, going to work, getting attacked by zombies and trying to find their son or daughter this story is set after all the zombies are gone. This adds a new twist and makes for an interesting setting.
The story is very good but the art is... not that good.
All of the soldiers look the same and the only way to tell them apart is to try and read the name plates on their helmets. When I started reading, Planters looked really young and seemed like he was going to be a "private" type character. But a couple pages later he suddenly looked like Bruce Willis. The only way I could tell who Planters was, was because he had goggles on his helmet. When the reader has to find ways to set the characters apart, you know your doing something wrong.
Hopefully as the story continues on a few characters die so I can actually tell them apart... and I hope that statement doesnt come back to bite me in the behind.
All in all I liked The Last Zombie and I'm excited to buy the next one. Brian Keene still has the gift and I wish the artist did too.
I was very disappointed by this trade. First its not clear from the description but it is in black and white. I typically don't mind that as I am a huge TWD fan, but here the art is not very good. In TWD the drawings are against a white background which makes the art really pop and you get a really good sense of the detail. Here the paper is dark and the art is done in pencil so its more like gray on gray. The art its self is fine, just difficult to enjoy. As for the story, there really isn't much meat here. It moves very fast and has a highly unsatisfying ending. I realize this is supposed to be a series but it can still have a satisfying ending that leads into more stories. After all the other high praise the author has gotten I was expecting a lot form this book and was just very disappointed in the end.
